In today's age, what actually constitutes the winning requisites for today's pop music? Is it the 2 verse+1 chorus+1 bridge structure (2V-1C-1B)? Or an instrumental arrangement that doesn't sound too 'avant-garde'? Or adopting contemporary lyrical themes? Many, both listeners and critics, certainly think so, and with reason. However, one could certainly ignore the formulaic elements like the ones above and still come up with a great pop number - with simply the right doses of creativity and relatability. These, among other traits, are found in good measure in Brian Iannucci's spectacular opening number for his album 'Double Felony' - titled 'Pour One Out'.
Written in the key of D minor, 'Pour One Out' is a radiant and heartfelt addition to the pop-rock genre, with major elements of country and blues being incorporated. The instrumentation incorporates a heady mix spearheaded by the guitars - both acoustic and electric - and drums, with able support from the ambient-sounding synths. The number is lyrically essentially set in a bar and is about the protagonist living in the moment, over a few drinks, hence the title.
The lyrics, at the outset, render themselves in a delightfully captivating fashion to the listener with their no-nonsense simplicity and genuineness, exuding that all-important dynamic energy ('The Buzz Is On, Listen To That Song, Let's Get This Party Going…' as the bridge depicts). Another trait that works for this song is that the number's structure is not the typical 2V-1C-1B, but that of 3 verses and 1 chorus, akin to a gospel number - which, given the lyrical theme and the fact that it is the opening number to a 24-track album, would have been a creatively bold decision to take. Nevertheless, that decision pays off brilliantly, thanks to the rendition of the lyrics by Florida-based Iannucci, who renders the words with a timbre that seems simultaneously polished and rustic and with a kinetic energy devoid of malice or vanity (as in the rendition of the chorus 'It's my time to wine' that never lets down either the song or the listener one jot).
Another particular trait of the number that stands out is the finite writing of the topline melody, which can be deemed responsible for its very endearing quality (it takes just 5 notes to conjure the topline) and which is done so in a very creative and appropriate manner as befitting the lyrical themes and overall energy. Little wonder then that the song has already been drawing comparisons to the likes of Thomas Rhett, Luke Bryan, and Luke Combs. Praise must be reserved for the spotless mix engineering of the song, courtesy of Josh Emmons. In particular, the sound of the kick, and in tandem with the overall low end of the frequency spectrum, is incredibly delectable to the ear, both trained and untrained.
'Pour One Out' is well worth the listener's three minutes and twenty-six seconds, and perhaps a re-listen as well! As we can gauge, Iannucci has broken many stereotypes in crafting the opening number to his album in more endearing ways than one and establishing a connection with the listener almost immediately, while not once straying into alternative territory. Many musicians today would do well to take note of this - simply by being creative and intelligent and thereby reaching out to the listener's heart and mind.
