Caitlin Rushing - HerSong Music Interview

Florida-born Caitlin Rushing is an Orlando based singer and songwriter. She was awarded 2nd place spot in the prestigious ISC (International Songwriting Competition) for her song “Hold On You.” Caitlin's fans love that her lyrics penetrate the heart and the soul. From the playful and infectious groove of the song “Mexico”, penned by Rushing and Smiley, to the lonely strum of the acoustic guitar on “Unsteady”, and to the dark, mournful haunting a of voice battling the ghosts and angels in her soul, Caitlin is a unique and beautiful artist of melody and mystery. What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?

I grew up with a single mother and two older brothers. Money was tight and in the 2nd grade, the class project was writing a letter to Santa, which I won and the gift included free piano lessons for 6 months. I ended up taking vocal lessons too, once my mother saw how interested I had become with music. I ended up performing from that day on, and I haven't stopped.

What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music?

My first song was, of course, about heartbreak. I never really planned on sharing the song and found it to be just a way to process my emotions at the time. Some friends and family I shared it encouraged me to record it. I think I was around 21 at the time.

Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer?

I still can play piano a little bit, but my main instrument is guitar.

What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)?

Having someone relate to my story and connecting in that way with them. That's the best feeling in the world.

Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music?

Be yourself, be authentic and honest.

For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with? I would say start with my new single Mexico and Hold on You. Those are my favorites and are also two totally different vibes and writing styles.

Where can fans access your music?
