California - I Could Make It Last Forever

The group California is Les Fradkin - Vocals, Mellotron, Piano, Bass, Guitars, Ztar, Songwriter, and Co-Production and Loretta Pieper Fradkin - Vocals, Songwriter, and Co-Production. On "I Could Make It Last Forever" they are joined by an amazing cast of musicians. But before we explore this pop-rock tune, let's take a look at the song's backstory.

It starts with Les Fradkin’s involvement with The Left Banke, an American pop band formed in 1965, coined "Bach-rock" by the music press. The Left Banke is known for their smash hit single “Walk Away Renee”. Back in 1972, as a Major label Record Producer, Les first produced “I Could Make It Last Forever” with Left Banke. It remained unreleased until Les's solo album “Goin’ Back” (2006). It was released with additional overdubs of Mellotron Brass and a new lead vocal by Les. Taking it to the next level in 2023, California is back with a fresh take that features original band members from The Left Banke! Les and Loretta keep all the warmth and add some modern tech elements. The song borrows sounds from past decades. From the 60s and 70s, there's a golden romanticism and a laid-back groove that form a relaxed vibe for catchy melodies. There's nothing pretentious about this song. It's sincere, flowing from an authentic emotion, and the new technology never takes away from that. Bravo.

With a vintage sound, the intro ramps up with tight drums and a solid bass groove tied together with the harmonious sounds of the Mellotron played by Les Fradkin. Building up toward the first verse, the arrangement strikes you with a theatrical sensation that draws you in with staccato hits and flourishes of the guitar before mellowing out a bit and letting the vocals take the lead. The new mix is perfectly conceived and will have you humming along soon after the song begins. The ear never has to strain to hear the melody or lyrics which is so refreshing. Everything sits perfectly in the mix so listeners can simply listen and enjoy.

The new doubled vocals give Les a great classic sound as the verses unravel through somber melodies about lost love, and the potential of a love that could have been.

"Since you've been away, things have been bad, but they could be better If you only stayed, I know in my heart it would be forever."

Where the song shines is in the chorus as Les breaks into an unforgettable hook with a crooning falsetto and deep layers of harmony that give this record that iconic "wall of sound" vibe. This is truly one of his best vocal performances, showcasing his vocal flexibility and range. The chorus literally sweeps you off your feet which is the intent. The clever ending will surprise you as sweet violins melt love's doubt away. The effect sounds like a prelude and you can't help but imagine the couple getting married. The song ends on three solid chords to drive this feeling home.
