What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?

My earliest memory of music is definitely when I first started playing piano when I was 4 years old. I remember being in Sunday school and one of the bigger kids playing “Heart-and-Soul” on an upright piano. At the time I remember thinking it was the COOLEST thing so I went up to him and asked him to show me how to play it. I remember him trying to teach me but my hands were too small to spread them out wide enough to hit all the notes. He told me, “You’re never going to be able to play!” and from that moment on I made it my mission to prove him wrong. Lol

What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music?

Wow, the first song I ever wrote? That has to have been a LOOOOOONNNGGG time ago. I think it was a song called, “through the rainbow” and I was probably about 5 years old. Lol. I also remember singing it around the house when I was a kid and my mom being surprised when she found out I was the one who came up with it. I actually can still recall all the words to it to this day. As a kid, I listened to lots of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion so I’ve always had a love for dramatic music.

Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer?

I actually write, produce and play all the instruments in my music. I first started with piano then I picked up guitar, bass and drums. I can also play violin, saxophone and a few others a bit. Piano is the basis of all instruments so I feel like if you really understand it and music theory, you can pick up most instruments and figure them out. I started producing music when I was about 11 years old and I learned a lot about sound engineering when I went to music school at 16 in Los Angeles.

What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)?

My favorite part about being an artist is the entire creative process. I love coming up with music that accurately reflects the emotion I’m trying to portray as well as coming up with live renditions to perform in front of audiences. Additionally, I also love directing and coming up with music video ideas. There’s nothing like having a vision for something in your mind and seeing it come to life.

Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music?

I would tell young women in the music industry two things. One. Don’t be afraid to get hands on and learn the technical side of the music industry. There’s power in creation and we need more women music creating from the female perspective… And two. Lets lift each other up.

The music industry has a way of pitting women against each other and there’s always this illusion created that only one woman in the bunch can succeed. This is a lie. We are stronger together and it’s time we support each other more both onstage and off.

For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with?

If you’ve never heard my music I would say to start with my song “Ricochet”. It has a nice blend of what a lot of my music sounds like. It’s chill and danceable yet melodic and takes you on a bit of a ride. If you’re looking for some motivation to get you through your day, check out my latest track, “Be About It”. It’s available now on all streaming platforms.
