Happy Curmudgeons – "Rustic Glory"

Review by Nico Low

Happy Curmudgeon's "Rustic Glory" brought a bittersweet smile to my face. Written about and dedicated to the passing of the writer, Dave Hamilton's father, the song is filled with authenticity and emotion, heard through the medium of Folk/Americana. There's something sacred in music and records such as this one. The guitar lick played at the beginning has a tinge of somberness yet a buoyant timbre, leading into an upbeat song about reflecting on fond memories. The bass carries the happy emotion, being the instrument played with the most pep in its step, but allows for the rest of the arrangement to feed into the nostalgic duality. The drums drive the tune forward, looking into the future, but play with a lax feel that matches the pleasant reminiscing of the lyrics, not wanting to let go of those memories.

There's something so honest about a song like this one.

"Like a summer breeze, blowing through the tree, you tellin' me the sacred part. And all those stories and the rustic glory remain deep within my heart."

The vocalist sings this hook with such depth of emotion I can feel the touch of grief left even within the acceptance.

"I'm on my way back home, through streets you've never known. Where the night times coolin, moonlight lights my way, to see a different day."

"Rustic Glory" truly feels like a celebration in how it's written and performed.

The song is both moving and fun. "Rustic Glory" is a perfect song for times when we want to reflect on our lives and what it means to cherish the memories of those who've been a part of them. Happy Curmudgeons hopes to have their second album released by the end of 2022. Be sure to be on the lookout for more great songs like this!
