Kelly Lynn Madison was born in Auburn, IN to music-loving parents who would often play the guitar and sing in the evenings. It was the perfect environment for the young artist to fall in love with music and songwriting. Now living in Oregon, Kelly Lynn creates music that resonates with her fan-base, writing songs from real-life experiences. Her main influences come from classic country with a hint of soul and a little rock. Kelly has been performing on stage for years and her live shows are full of energy and spirit with songs that make you want to get up and dance. Her favorite types of venues are the small hometown tucked-away places where she can really connect with your audience. For fans of the Indiana/Oregon native, this country/soul/rock singer will remind you of a young Shania Twain who can also bring in the passion of a Bonnie Raitt. Madison released her first album and has a brand new single, “Can I Love You Now”, in February of 2020. What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?
My earliest memory of music was hearing my mom and dad playing guitars and singing doing harmonies in the living room when I was 6. My family was very musical, but I was drawn to it on my own and started singing in choir in 3rd grade. I was always in choirs, all through high school, and then I had the opportunity to enter a vocal competition at age 19 and travel to Nashville. Then at age 21, I had the chance to do back up vocals for an up and coming Canadian country artist on his first album and open for Sara Evans, and it just kept going from there.
What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music?
The first song I ever wrote was called "I Need You Now", when I was in 2nd grade, so 7 I think. This was very much inspired by songs made popular by Debbie Gibson and Tiffany, so it was a very teen pop-style song. My inspiration to write music came from other female artists that I looked up to when I was young and I just started writing, words and melodies would just come to me out of the blue and I would have to write them down quickly before they left my head.
Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer?
I mostly write music in my head so I work very closely with a producer to create my tracks and studio musicians to help my songs come to life. I have a voice recorder app on my phone so that I capture the new songs that come to me on the spot.
What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)?
My favorite part about being an artist is definitely writing and recording. I love writing music from personal experiences and then hearing it all put together and complete it's almost therapeutic for me and brings the whole creative aspect of being a musician full circle.
Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music?
Follow your heart, there may be a lot of people out there who can sing and play and write and want to sing and be a part of the music industry, but there is room for everyone and no one else is you. You have something very important and special to bring to the music scene that no one else has; believe in yourself. I truly believe that if it is meant to work out, it will. Your mind is very powerful so don't doubt yourself, just go for it. because you and you alone are who decides how far you can go.
