“Soldier’s Song” starts with heavy cello, drums, and bass that commence on the first beat causing a surge of power that strikes the listener. The natural bellows of an old southern spiritual come to life in “Soldier’s Song.” You can feel the emotion in the first 10 seconds of the song - there’s a heavy pain being communicated.
Lakotah enters in the first verse with a high shrill in her voice. A layering and doubling of her vocals is added for a haunting effect. Her 70's classic rock influences are prevalent during the build-up as the drums, electric guitar, and voice cascade over the song. The cello drives the rhythm section with a repetitive beat as the electric guitar whales fiercely throughout the song.
The song's production, by Sejo Navajas, is clean which allows for each instrument to shine seamlessly. Guitarist Frank Greenfield, cellist Erin Hawkins, bassist Andreas Kvinge, and drummer Andrew Keller have an inclusive and tight performance.
Lakotah’s “Soldier’s Song” tells the pains of what a soldier goes through in the repercussions of war.
Lakotah sings in an eerie tone:
“The truth is it’s been told to me tends to outweigh the fight for Christianity. In a Muslim state Jack ‘n Jill went up the hill To fetch a drink of water and as they played the soldiers came and took away their father. Don’t want to be a part of it. Don’t want to be a part of it all.”
There are children, mothers, fathers, and whole families affected in warfare. The disruption and corruption, pain and suffering, is immeasurable. Lakotah's unconventional style stretches the boundaries of music and expands our empaty. With great lyrical and musical fervor, "Solider's Song (4th Edition)" showcases superb production, musicianship, and songwriting.
