Stereo Glow - 'Changing In The Light'

Review by Vaibhav Thomas

When it comes to pioneering production techniques, experimentation with samples, and above all, a thirst to be perpetually sonically different, the legendary Daft Punk comes to mind. Of course the enigma surrounding them has contributed to their legend but the fact remains that they are essentially the fathers of modern pop and EDM music, having crafted a sonic roadmap that is now staple to contemporary music. It takes quite the effort to establish that all-important balance between creativity, songwriting and mixing for a song to elevate its' genre. That said, there have been some exceptional numbers that have achieved this. One such mark is melodic pop-rock duo Stereo Glow’s latest, titled ‘Changing In The Light’. Written in the key of C minor, ‘Changing In The Light’ is part of the duo’s (lead vocalist Jessica Jellen and guitarist Mark Burke) album ‘Where There Are No Words.’ It is a metaphor-driven synth pop-rock number with ounces of creative elements added in the form of ambient vocal textures with retro dancd elements. Lyrically themed upon the gamut of emotions processed during the pandemic period, the number boasts lyrics that are resolutely enigmatic with no dearth of uniqueness.

Right from the intro, with the Ooh La La's accompanied by panned filtering that runs throughout the song, listeners are immediately clued into the fact that they're in for an unforgettable experience. The punchy kick and consistent bassline work in perfect harmony, and with lyrics like "Go up to the moon and we can see ourselves running all around in circles" or "Lost souls breathe through dreams wandering, sparkling," there's a sense of no turning back. The song's pandemic-era emotions are intelligently and creatively expressed in the lyrics, steering clear of clichés. What truly elevates this track to distinction is Jessica Jellen's lead vocals and her rich range of counterpoint melodies and harmonies, transporting listeners into a dreamy world. Mark Burke's rhythmic strumming of the electric guitar and the punchy bassline provide a solid foundation, not to mention a stunning guitar solo with near-perfect tone, leading into a melodic and brilliantly chord-modulated bridge. Special praise must also go to the mixing and mastering engineers, Howie Beck and Noah Mintz, for their expert incorporation of reverbs and filters on the vocals, as well as the unique acidic and ambient textures, all blended coherently to give the song a mainstream pop vibe. Every element in the mix is allocated the perfect space, making it a well-crafted sonic experience.

Clocking in at three minutes and fifty-five seconds, "Changing In The Light" is a standout addition to the pop genre. It has achieved the delicate balance between creativity, songwriting, and mixing without veering too far into the alternative realm—a rarity in today's music landscape. This track is a remarkable example of innovative and thought-provoking storytelling, capable of engaging the intellectual senses, leaving a lasting impression.
