The fusion of musical genres deserves even more recognition in the mainstream realm than it currently receives. The capacity of fusion to inspire instant creative brainwaves in artists' minds and the vast canvas of inventiveness it offers should be openly acknowledged. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, especially for the truly talented ones. This is partly due to the modern tendency to classify fusion numbers as alternative or underground, resulting in a loss of traction. So, how can this issue be addressed? One method involves arranging and fusing multiple genres while showcasing a profound virtuosity unique to each genre. This stands out while seamlessly amalgamating instrumental elements from these genres. A stellar example of this approach is found in South Carolina-based Sunset Black's latest release titled 'Music Made Me'. "Music Made Me" is written in the key of D Major and beautifully combines elements of hip-hop and country-rock, with hints of gospel. It showcases a remarkable technical mastery in various aspects of songwriting, arrangement, and mixing. This mastery aligns with the lyrical theme, which revolves around finding solace and motivation in music during challenging times. The lyrics themselves are presented in a straightforward and impactful manner, reflecting raw emotions. Lines like 'And when you’ve traveled so far, it helps to find what you are. And I promise I won’t look back, ‘cause for once my life is on track.' resonate powerfully.
The song's progression begins with an acoustic guitar's smooth strums that swiftly lead into a five-chord progression. The ambient synth textures complement this progression. As Sunset Black's weighty tonal textures enter, they convey the lyrics with down-to-earth pragmatism and determination. His vocals serve as both the backbone and the soul of the song. The arrangement of the groove is commendable for its role in seamlessly blending different genres. The kick sound, one of the cleanest I've heard recently, stands out, and the hi-hats are skillfully added or subtracted at the pre-chorus and verse, enhancing the groove's dynamics. The pre-chorus, the verse and chorus share the same captivating melody, which suits the lyrical theme exceptionally well. Despite this repetition, the song maintains interest through variations in dynamics, expression, and meter, building an anthemic intensity!
With a duration of two minutes and forty-nine seconds, 'Music Made Me' makes a triumphant contribution to contemporary music. It serves as a profound example of fusion and brilliant mixing for music enthusiasts and students alike. The chorus melody is likely to linger in listeners' minds long after the song ends, just as it did for me.
