Review By Patrick Joseph
“Global Wilderness” is a song that would be completely at home as a soundtrack to a show, movie, or animated video. There is a cinematic quality to this music that would allow it to pair perfectly with a visual story line. The inherently peaceful nature of this song would underscore a journey’s completion perfectly. At the same time, the harmonic motion and emotional resolve contained in the song would make it appropriate for moments of personal dedication and/or reflection. This is a song that will amplify the emotional stakes of almost any on-screen narrative.
Lyrically, “Global Wilderness” is thought provoking and poetic. The rhetorical questions posed by this song inspire reflection in listeners. “Who’s gonna greet you, when there is no one there beside you? A global wilderness.” The passion in Abijah’s vocals bring these lyrics to life. “There’s no lights in the city… No one is there with a smile, Deceit and distance are in their eyes.” The visual imagery in these lyrics make this song a perfect companion to a screenplay.
Sonically, “Global Wilderness” is compelling without being overwhelming. The timbre of the guitar is simultaneously soft and present. The understated percussion orchestration is driving but sparse. The bass line is hypnotic and seems to tell a story of its own. Above all, Abijah’s soulful vocals act as a window into the human condition. Listeners will be inspired to reflect on their own inner voices due to the confluence of these sounds. “Global Wilderness” is truly a great piece of music that would shine as an aid to any visual display.
