Bible Belt Blues - 'The Glory Belongs to You, Lord'

Review by Sylvie Marie & Staff

"The Glory Belongs to You" is a song by Bible Belt Blues who are a husband and wife music ministry team. The duo consists of Harold and Paula Vega Vondenstein. A short bio of the award-winning group is included at the end of this review and more information about their music ministry can be found at biblebeltblues.org

"The Glory Belongs to You, Lord" features Harold Vega Vondenstein (Composer, Vocalist, Guitarist, and Harmonica Player) and Paula Vega Vondenstein (Visionary, Lyricist, and Producer). Together, they have created a song of reverence and repentance. In 2019, the song has received more radio play than all of the duo's songs combined and it helped pave the way for Bible Belt Blues to win a coveted Jose Music Award.

The song's composition features blues guitar and harmonica. Harold plays the guitar as though it is part of his soul. He digs deep into the strings and pulls out a unique and raw blues sound that is captivating. In the beginning, a very strong groove is created. Single lines mixed with a variety of riffs and double stops showcase Harold's natural talent. On "The Glory Belongs to You, Lord" he also plays the harmonica with lines that cry out like an electric guitar and weep like a soulful singer.

The lyrics are perhaps what has made this song resonate with so many listeners. Written by Paula Vega Vondenstein, the lyrics are downright bold and brave. The word "shame" may make some people very uncomfortable. In today's world you hear a lot about how people are not ashamed of who they are. Paula shows that feeling shame is part of the process, from regret to redemption, and she isn't afraid to say it. In a world where feeling shame for taking credit where it is not due has been replaced by super-sized fragile egos, Paula isn't "ashamed" to talk about shame.

Moving forward, the lyrics express remorse. "Looking back I'm filled with shame. The glory belongs to You, Lord. The glory belongs to You." Upon looking back, Paula flips the script to one of glory and gratitude. "It was YOU...who gave to me, saw me, opened doors for me.

In "The Glory Belongs to You, Lord" Bible Belt Blues take listeners on a journey that involves taking an inventory of the ways in which self grandiosity can replace Glory to God and how correcting that error can bring redemption. Musically and lyrically, the song is reverential, redemptive, and remorseful, and one to play on repeat.
