Please Pass the Indie is proud to present this interview with Brighton Strangler. The five piece band is influenced by Gang of Four and the Buzzcocks .As the story goes, lead singer Matthew decided to form a band after his singing was dissed at a party. Despite their late start they are making up for lost time and the band's energetic and committed live performances are gaining them a following. The release of Dancing Outrageous brings their old punk energy to a new audience.bands before and started they started rehearsing. Brighton Strangler's current line-up is Matthew, Nick, Robert, Mikey and Steve.
For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!
Simple, but catchy; clean, and yet dirty; and most of all fun.
When you are writing a song, where do you draw inspiration from? Or what topics do you like to sing about?
It's a cross between fun and serious. So on the one hand it's about partying, love and having a good time, while on the other it's about homelessness or getting old. Then there's always a tongue in cheek element; we don't take ourselves too seriously. Our new songs we are currently writing take in topics such as tax evasion and the gig economy. Basically we are happy to highlight any issue, but we still want to rock n roll.

Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
I write and want to become a published writer. Robert is already published, a couple of novels and poetry anthologies. Steve seems to always be out cycling, running, climbing or whatever. Mikey is a great artist and is usually painting or having an exhibition. Nick helps run a pub quiz which I sometimes join him at. I also like to see my local football team, Brighton and Hove Albion. And we all love going to the pub!
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?
End of The Line, which I actually wrote a poem for over thirty years ago when I was waiting for a train at Lewes station. The rhythm of the song is like the movement of a train and speeds up. This parallels the meaning of the lyrics which are about getting old and eventually dying, and the song quickens as you get closer to death, when you reach the End of the Line.
What was the first song or piece you ever wrote!?
Not sure but Paper Cuts, and Ketamine were certainly amongst them. This was when I realized that I could actually write songs and quite good ones at that. At this time there were many other songs which fell by the wayside such as You Are My Love, and Mayfly. These had potential but weren't quite right, maybe i'll revisit them in the future.
What is your dream gig? Is there a gig that you really want that would be the ultimate show for you?
I just want to play a festival, the bigger the better. I can't think of anything better than playing in front of 20,000 people who are just high on being there. Festival crowds just love live music and I want to experience that love.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?
Yes, second album, so look out for songs such as You Got Something Babe, I think this could be a great rocking song. Not sure what we will call the album but I have a tentative idea of naming it Started Alright, if we include this new song on the album. This year we want to do more gigs, get more airplay and hopefully play a festival.
