Complicate/Simple is an eclectic rock/alternative/mainstream band that borrows influences from rock stars past and present. Unique playing styles and backgrounds converge smooth rock riffs with a syncopated timbre of modernized, smooth, affluent and tasteful tunes. End result: You want to know, sing, tap your feet, clap your hands and jam out to it. Please Pass the Indie caught up with the band for an exclusive interview.
For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!! Our flavor of rock and roll reminds of you some of your favorite songs while delivering a refreshing new take that's hook-laden and unique.
When you are writing a song, where do you draw inspiration from? Or what topics do you like to sing about? Song writing for us is an in-the-moment experience. I usually write about real-life experiences, past or present, hopes, aspirations, afflictions and more. I not only find great joy in musical composition and the final product output, but also in the inner healing it offers to one’s soul.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing? When I am not doing music, I am busy running several companies that range from software to marketing, e-commerce and more. During my free-time, I love to play music with my band Complicate/Simple as well as my other band, Two/Few, which features my wife on Bass and my brother on Guitar. Music comprises a large majority of my life.
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it? Our new single, “Heart on Her Sleeve,” is the most emotional song I’ve written. It’s entirely about how I met my wife, the early struggles our relationship endured and how we were able to find each other and grow in our marriage. It’s so strong, we’ve spent the last two weeks filming an amazing music video that documents how our relationship has evolved and how this single reflects that combined emotion. That video will drop in the next few weeks.
What was the first song or piece you ever wrote!? The first song I wrote was called “Desire.” It was a wonderful song that attracted the attention of several major labels. But I was a bit young and wet behind the ears at the time. So I wasn’t able to fully take advantage of nor recognize the opportunity I had before me.
What is your dream gig? Is there a gig that you really want that would be the ultimate show for you? This is a great question. A dream gig for me would be playing a packed concert hall with other notable artists and being able to gain actionable feedback from them (hopefully positive) in the aftermath.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year? We sure are. Complicate/Simple is set to release several new singles this year while my other band, Two/Few is heading to Nashville in a few months to cut a new EP at Driveby Recording Studio. It’s going to be an epic year.
