“Meant 2 Be” is a sweet folk inspired ballad by Detroit’s very own “The Happy Curmudgeons” and much like their name implies, the song itself is a cheerful slab of Americana flavored with just a hint of melancholy.
Listeners will be greeted by the Happy Curmudgeons signature blend of bright and lush acoustic guitars, warm bass tones and earnest vocals that at least to my ear, have a Jerry Garcia inspired delivery. Though there are no drums on this track, the Happy Curmudgeons sense of pocket is displayed in full force as guitars and bass come together to create a tight rhythm regardless of a lack of percussion.
The vocal interplay by Amy and Dave brings something new to the table as the verses are shared between male and female vocals. Making for a nice call and response dynamic in the song as well as the lyrical content. The latter of which is probably best summed up in the lyrics “Meant to be, meant to be together” during the chorus as rich vocal harmonies intertwine to bring the message home.If you haven’t guessed by now by the title, is centered around themes of a couple professing one’s love to each other and recongizing the connection they share.
The production once again is very clean, warm and bright with great separation between each instrument. In short, “Meant 2 Be”. Is a soothing ballad that is easy to relate to and sweet to the ear. With songs like "Meant 2 Be", it is easy to see how the Happy Curmudgeons landed a W.A.M. award.
