Music Review by Ionas Finser & Staff
Kala Farnham introduces us to this expressive gem of a song with a moody piano that welcomes in the first verse.
Farnham’s voice is angelic and masterfully reverberated, and her melodies prove to be flowing and natural. In fact, ‘natural’ is a perfectly descriptive word for “Beautiful Heart” as a whole. We find this especially true in the piano part’s subtle use of rubato, an element that speaks to the artist’s sense of freedom and independence. By the second chorus, a beautiful, uplifting motif is introduced in the piano part. The motif carries on and becomes increasingly powerful through to the end of the song. This motif seems to act as a symbol for finding strength and not letting it go.
It is clear that the lyrics of “Beautiful Heart” are sung by a voice that has dealt with pain and trauma. Farnham paints a moving message for women across the world, centered around the idea of finding inner strength and never giving up in a society that was built to suppress the feminine voice. The message is uplifting, but while Farnham inspires courage, the troubled world she sings of does not seem to be changing as quickly as we would like it to.
“It’s a hard game girl; / Sometimes justice never comes. / Don’t you lose faith girl; / Gotta hold your head high and be strong.”
In a post #MeToo Era society, songs like “Beautiful Heart” are more needed than ever in order to perpetuate courage, freedom, and integrity. With the melodic genius of Ingrid Michaelson and the harmonic soul of Enya, Kala Farnham has found the courage to speak her truth in this emotional masterpiece that should be added to every folk playlist that values musical integrity.
