Lakotah - 'Soldier's Song (4th Street Version)'

Music Review by Victoria Scott & Staff

Lakotah's haunting voice at the beginning of Soldier's Song (4th Street Version) runs under your skin. The band, which includes cellist Erin Hawkins, guitarist Frank Greenfield, bassist Andreas Kvinge, and drummer Andrew Keller, give an unforgettable performance. The cello and electric guitar are expansive in the beginning, creating a haunting sound that compliments Lakotah’s lead vocals. Lakotah's tone is smooth, yet powerful. The whole arrangement is wickedly compelling and the production by Sejo Navajas is impressive.

The first verse in "Soldier's Song," “Soldiers to the left of me, tears from the sky, a picture-perfect legacy, no place to hide, Mary has a little lamb, her arms they tremble so, and everywhere the soldiers went poor Mary has to go,” depicts the conflicts that are happening across the world and how theses conflicts hurt our children. The use of the child's rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is brilliant as it immediately brings to mind a child who should be playing in the sun, not in the midst of soldiers and war.

"Soldier's Song" is not just about conflict, it also reveals the power of love and humanity. When the key changes, as the guitar drops out, and the bass, drums and vocals enter - a space is made for the poignant message. “The soldiers they stand to the left of me, the mothers are gathered to the right, everyone questions their destiny, for the bombs fall tonight.” This line unites all in the need for peace.

Lakotah’s alternative electronic rock style is organic and powerful. You can hear the influences of Kate Bush and Alison Goldfrapp in her vocals as Lakotah's sound is commanding and confident. There are moments in “Soldier’s Song” when you are closing your eyes and contemplating life. The song brings a deep sense of awareness to the war front and the damage it inflicts. Lakotah’s voice is mesmerizing, and she gives a raw and dynamic performance that will stay with you.
