Review by Patrick Joseph & Staff
“Can’t Make You Change” packs a serious punch. This song moves like a battleship through the ocean. A swung intro of overdriven bass and punchy drums speaks volumes and sets a tone for the song to come. Simultaneously heavy and danceable, it tows a fine line which results in a catchy, engaging rock song.
Vocal production is intricate and well done. Jeane’s vocals are a perfect match for the tone of the song, resulting in an edgy, relatable sound. Listeners will be lured right in by the overall sound of the band and won over by the advanced songwriting and instrumental execution.
Lyrically, “Can’t Make you Change” is ultimately a message of strength to anyone who has had to sever ties with a negative influence. “Waking up on the floor and our daily trips to the liquor store, I want something more” the power of the vocal take makes these lyrics jump right out of the speakers. “I can’t tell you what to do with your life, but I can tell you I don’t want to be a part of it. I should have walked away yesterday because I can’t make you change.” Jeane sings these lyrics in an anthemic, “shout to the heavens” style, winning over listeners and delivering the song’s message with an uplifting tone.
“Can’t make you Change” demonstrates brilliance in arrangement and production. The sledgehammer sound of the rhythm section meshes nicely with the attitude of the vocal take. The dynamic peak of the choruses is supported by simmering verses. Band “hits” elevate the song and keep listeners on their toes. Rhythmic developments from every angle keep the groove fresh and stimulating. A break away bridge is heavy as hell, cascading into hair raising solo vocals before the band explodes back onto the track.
In short, “Can’t Make You Change” is fantastically well done. It’s heavy, catchy, and engaging…alt-rock at its best.
