Review by Matt Wong & Staff
“Rain or Shine” is a country song by Todd Barrow. The song starts out with an intro of acoustic guitar, tambourine, and harmonica. Barrow’s heart-warming vocals come in on a partial chorus before the song moves into the first verse. Todd demonstrates his talent as a songwriter who hooks you from the first note. The piano and harmonica take turns playing beautiful fills and complementing the melody. The song form is straightforward, and subsequently proceeds into a full chorus, a second verse, a double chorus, and ends with a tag making it accessible to listeners from beginning to end.
The lyrics behind “Rain or Shine” are inspired by real events that happened at one of Barrow’s shows in Houston, Texas. The verses tell the story of a struggling couple with lyrics such as “You tell your friends that it’s over” and “I’m at a bar in Houston…to erase your sweet loving memory.” It is certainly a complicated relationship and Barrow sings on the chorus, “Rain or shine I’m gonna love you…I just can’t drink you off my mind.” Barrow has a knack for capturing the complexities of the human spirit in a way that everyone can relate to.
“Rain or Shine” is a well written song that tells a story of the complexities of love. Listeners will connect with the song’s lyrics, and the song’s arrangement supports the story, and allows listeners to follow it seamlessly. Todd Barrow is a talented songwriter, top notch performer, and a wonderful story teller.
