VK Lynne - 'Salvation in the Skies'

Review by Daniel Hoyt & Staff

“Salvation in the Skies” is a moving Christmas song that has a variety of turns that keep the listener intrigued throughout the piece. The song starts off with piano, bells and acoustic guitar, which sets a magical Christmas vibe. As the song continues, a hand drum plays for a nice, organic touch; it is heard through the first chorus, and then replaced by a full kit playing sixteenth notes throughout the rest of the song.

As the chorus begins, the dynamic of the piece is increased to create a heavier feeling. As the second chorus ends, the piece goes back to the roots of the beginning with the simplicity and low dynamic. The song's overall feel is down-to-earth which will appeal to a mass audience.

VK Lynne has a gorgeous voice that is full of soulfulness and delicate expression. The beauty and grace of this song come from Lynne's intimate lyrics that speak of a personal salvation from experience. Whereas, Christmas songs usually have the Santa feel to it or a external religious feel, Lynne "searches the spaces of her heart." This holiday song is a breath of fresh air with a unique honesty that is very refreshing.

"Suddenly I stand at a door, that I swore, I’d never see again / I use the key that’s in my hand to unlock the past and let it go at last. "

This song takes a spiritual path and does it with ease. It makes many notable references in the piece such as, “silent night,” and, “I’m not a man, and I’m not wise.” Just as the wise men saw “Salvation in the Skies,” so did the main character of this song and it feels like a spiritual awakening. The tune is also telling a story of some “wrongs that need made right.” “Salvation in the Skies” is more than a holiday song, it's a song about redemption and finally arriving at internal peace.

VK Lynne's "Salvation in the Skies" is familiar in its' references, popular in its' style and brilliant in its lyrics, performance and execution. Lynne tells a story with gentle turns of how she, or any of us, can be enlightened this Christmas, simply by looking up at the stars and remembering that there is salvation in the skies and this love is there for all of us. This is one beautiful holiday song that should be on everyone's playlist.
