Katy Crawford - "Dwell (Psalm 23)"

Review by Patrick Joseph

“Dwell (Psalm 23)” is a powerhouse display of musical prowess. All details shine in this song, resulting in an undeniably engaging listening experience. Excellent production values give the song clarity, while vocal and instrumental performances generate a palpable energy. The verses simmer with momentum, building anticipation for the chorus. The vocal hook hits like a sledgehammer. By the end of the song you feel completely immersed in the melody.

“Dwell (Psalm 23)” does an inspired job of introducing a fresh sound to accompany the Psalm. “I will dwell in Your house forever, forever, I will know your mercy and goodness forever.” Crawford delivers these sentiments with a spirit of belief. “So, I will fear no evil You are with me.” These inspiring words carry an even greater charge when set to this music.

“Dwell (Psalm 23)” is brilliantly arranged. A colorful harmonic structure is achieved through the chordal instruments, which are rhythmic and driving. The bass line is intricate and expressive, while drums are masterfully played and expertly recorded. Crawford’s vocal take is breathtaking. She demonstrates an ability to fire off an amazing amount of intensity without ever sounding out of control. “Dwell (Psalm 23)” will have your hands in the air.

About Katy Crawford

Dallas native, Katy Crawford is a singer-songwriter who has been leading worship at home and abroad for over a decade. She grew up in church, ministering alongside her family, and continues to carry on that legacy by striving to bring the songs the Lord has given her to people around the world. Her international ministry led her to begin recording her original songs in 2015, beginning with a French worship EP, then following with several releases in English.

Working with legendary Nashville producer Billy Smiley, she released two singles, Grace That Saves the World and By My Side. The first, released for Christmas in 2019, is a melodic and powerful song about accepting and partnering with God in His plan for this Earth, much in the way that Mary accepted the call to become the mother of Jesus. The second, released in March 2020, is an intimate prayer to the Lord from a place of brokenness, expressing the need to continue to find our identity in Him no matter what circumstance.

Katy’s newest project, Dwell, once again produced by Smiley and recorded at Sound Kitchen and Red Street Records, was released in June 2020. Dwell, is a collection of songs written during a time when she felt the Lord calling her to read through and write a new song from each of the Psalms every day. Her fresh and sincere take on these well-known scriptures allows the listener to feel a deeper connection with those ancient words, many of which focus on glorifying God in times of distress. Continuing in her dedication to the calling the Lord has placed on her life to reach the nations through music, she is currently working on French, Spanish, and Portuguese versions of the songs from Dwell and plans to release them along with a full worship album later in 2021.
