Presenting the musical lovechild of greats -Chelsea Blues. Chelsea infuses the freestyle and scat styles of Ella Fitzgerald and Bobby McFerrin and the lyricism and vocal performance of LauyrnHill, Erykah Badu, and AmyWinehouse in her own unique music. The Jazz and Soul Singer/Songwriter from The Bahamas (now based in London, UK) is greatly known for her live freestyles and spoken word. Chelsea’s sound can be described as a melting pool of colors and warm sentiments that guide you through an individual paradise made just for you. When you experience her message of “love self to love others" through her blend of new school energy and old school dynamics, you will hear why the combination is not to be missed.
What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?
My earliest memories of music are of running up and down around the house creating dance to my mother's Motown and Mozart collection. I began singing my own lyrics over famous musicians songs at eight - although still to shy to share. However poetry has always been my rock solid foundation for my writing as a whole. After I hit 15/16 is when I dabbled in posting YouTube covers, and never watching them back! Two years later I move to London in 2012 to "take it by storm" - when I still hadn't overcome my fear of singing in public. Then truly dived into it as a career a year later and have been creating and sharing ever since.
What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music?
The first song I made, that I can remember, was a gospel song, very elegantly named 'Untitled'. It was a song of gratitude in advance for easing of the pain in my life as a teenager. I sang it to myself to get through many issues.
Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer? I am currently secretly teaching myself guitar. Other than that I mainly rely on my band or backing tracks for my shows. I do not yet produce! However, I am very aware that there are very many producers out there with amazing work - and I'm all about collaboration.
What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)?
Jam sessions. Be them live jams, rehearsals, lock-in at the pub jam sessions, or even the after party on Primrose Hill in the rain - I love creating in the moment. That's my favourite part.
Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music?
My advice for anyone pursuing music; do not do this because you want an easy way out. Do it because it's YOUR passion. This career is more than just getting up on stage, or being an 'iconic' look. This is truly for those who want to build a company, build an empire. Most importantly, once you do decide that it's what you want - don't let ANYTHING get in your way, yourself included! My advice.
For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with?
Welcome to those who don't know my music. My recommended selection would be Emotional Availability and Hoping for the Best.
Emotional Availability: has this RnB vibe about it, super soulful and pouty for lack of a better word to describe the vocal textures. It's the - grab a glass of wine and watch the sunset - kind of track.
Hoping for the Best: this song is literally audio sunshine. Honestly. You could start with this song, put it in the middle of a playlist and once more at the end. It was made to inspire hope and positive perspective.
Where can fans access your music?
