Cho Colette - HerSong Music Interview

Cho Colette is a solo artist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who puts her heart on her musical and poetic sleeve. Based in Somerville, MA, Cho produces music in various languages, including English, Turkish, French, Portuguese, German, Russian, and Hebrew. As an artist who enjoys collaboration, her projects are available on her Soundcloud page. Cho Colette aims to produce the type of music she likes without the walls of genre, but Google characterizes her music as "Alternative/Indie."

What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?

I remember singing to 2000's R & B songs (very loudly!) in the bus going to elementary school. My friends seemed ok with it, so I never really stopped singing.

What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music?

I wanted to compose a song for an English class assignment in high school. We had just read “Holes,” and the project was to create something artsy relating to “Holes.” There is a little poem at the very end of the book, named “If only,” I fell in love with that poem and made it into a little song. I used the same music for writing my song “Apollo (If Only)” in my album “Her Kooky Ways,” and that was the first song I wrote. The lyrics are also very much inspired from the poem. If you know the poem, you can almost hear it :0).

Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer?

I have been classically trained with piano. I also trained with the violin for a year, electric guitar for one summer, and drums (retro rock and bongo) for a couple years. I’ve written, composed, produced all the songs in my album Her Kooky Ways and my single Hope, including the music video, myself. I use an app to put together everything and finalize the songs. On the other hand - I do really enjoy collabs, and I have collaborated with various artists and producers via SoundCloud. You can find these songs on my SoundCloud page. I also have many covers there.

What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)?

Having people tell me they could connect to my music and that it made them realize a feeling they hadn’t realized was there.

Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music?

Don’t fear. There will be critiques, there will be people, who tell you you can’t do it and your other job, etc., because they can’t. Move yourself gently away from such negative people. Surround yourself with people, who respect what you want. Then, make music the way you want to.

For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with?

Start with “Hope.” This is the first song I shot a video over. It is very special to me. The video is also pre-nominated for "International Independent Music Video Awards 2020."

Secondly, check out “Apollo (If Only),” since I’ve already mentioned it above ;) Thirdly (but not lastly), check out “Theme Song for s Designer’s Movie (More).” I think I’ve used my voice best in that one. ..but perhaps you can decide :0)

Where can fans access your music?

Listen on Spotify.

Find on Apple Music.
