Jacquelyn Tober - HerSong Music Interview

Jacquelyn Tober leads The Rose County Ramblers, a country band based in Toronto, Canada who have been performing regionally for seven years. Jacquelyn grew up in a small town on the Alberta prairies then moved to Nova Scotia to study music professionally. During that time, Jacquelyn met her co-writer and guitarist, Ryan Butler. She was drawn to the colorful songwriting and storytelling of Nova Scotia and found a connection there to country music. It was then she realized the soundtrack to her youth and the musical parallels to home.

What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?

I'm not sure what my earliest memory of music is, but according to my parents, I was always singing as a little girl. I started taking piano lessons when I was five and voice lessons when I was around the age of ten. I also took part in many school choirs & bands while growing up - I was definitely a music nerd at school.

What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music?

I didn't start writing my own songs until my early twenties. I had been nervous to try it, but I was tired of singing jazz standards and wanted to sing something that I could connect with better, so I gave it a try. The first song was called "Katie & E.C." which was written for my nieces.

Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer?

I've played piano for many years and learned guitar about five years ago. For the Rose County Ramblers, I am lucky to work with Ryan Butler (lead guitar), David Chan (drums & background vocals), and Phil Albert (bass). For our EP, I had the pleasure of working with producers Michael Evans and Joy Phillips.

What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)?

My favourite part of being an artist is the performing. I love that magical energy that's in a room when the show is going well and the audience is into the music. It's such an adrenaline high.

Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music?

Always play the music that brings you the most joy.

For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with?

I would recommend listening to "Shake" (which was written for us by the very talented Joy Phillips) or "Let It Lie".
