What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music?
My earliest memory of music was standing on the piano bench conducting an imaginary orchestra to records my mother would put on of the opera "Carmen." My father was a musician. I started as a toddler singing on his radio show in Chicago. Then he started teaching me piano at the age of 4 and found me a teacher for violin at 7.
What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music? I don't remember what song was the first song that I ever wrote. I was making up songs while swinging as very little girl. Later I played guitar and wrote songs in my early teens. Probably the first "real" song was called "My Boat." I still remember the melody.
Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer?
I play piano as my first instrument and singing. But I also can play violin, guitar and am learning cello.
Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music? Pursue music if it is your passion. If you love it so much that you just can't wait to write the next song and you just love practicing long hours and you don't mind constantly going through all the barriers. But it does take that kind of passion. That makes it all worth while.
For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with?
My music is pretty eclectic. Earlier in my career I composed for Broadway, then rock and now neo-classical and sort of jazz songs. The main thing that drives my music is my passion. If you'd rather here something that's instrumental I'd suggest "Jewel Box" or "Follow My Heart (Instrumental featuring Stewart Cole on trumpet)" For vocal pieces, I'd suggest "Love in the Afternoon (feat Stanley Clarke on Bass) or "Always Lovers". All three of those songs are on my "Colors of My Heart" album which debuted in Billboard Top Ten Classical, Classical cross-over and Jazz charts.
