Coast 2 Coast Feat. The Fantastic Gems - 'Sing This Song To You'

Review by Patrick Joseph

“Sing This Song to You” is a smooth song with tons of energy and soul. The lead vocal is extremely expressive and engaging. The band is right in the pocket, with a killer rhythm section and fantastic acoustic guitar melodies. The backup chorus is huge, almost like a gospel choir. This music is very eclectic, selecting the most engaging elements of several styles and combining them to create one unique, phenomenal sound. Listeners will love the modern take on an old-school feel.

Lyrically, “Sing This Song to You” highlights the idea that sometimes the most effective communication is music itself.

“I tried to write, pen and pad in hand but I don’t think I can find the words to make you understand, instead I’ll sing this song to you.”

The soulful, complex nature of the music takes on a new life when it is presented as something words cannot express.

“Sing this song to you…on a cloudy day…Sing this song to you…so many words to say.”

The call and response between the lead vocal and backup vocals are incredibly powerful.

“Sing This Song to You” is intricate and densely layered. There is so much offered by the virtuosic lead vocal melody, massive harmony vocals, and inspired bass fills. This is the kind of song that, when it starts to fade out, you get disappointed because you want to keep living in the groove. The music is very powerful, and the vocals are infectious. Listeners will be impressed how the harmonic progression just sits in the same place while Coast 2 Coast and The Fantastic Gems create perfectly created dynamic peaks and valleys.

About Coast 2 Coast

Back in 1968, a music group called The Fantastic Gems was born at Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey. After graduation, the talented musicians went off to college, the military, and new careers. Years later, two of the original members reformed in Washington D.C. as "Coast 2 Coast" and began recording and performing from 1986 to 1990. In 2016, The Fantastic Gems got back together to fulfill a promise they made to each other when they were young students in New Jersey. The result of their reunion was the release of The New Old Skool. The album is a tribute to their musical roots and was made in recognition of the community who encouraged, supported, and shaped their musical spirit. The New Old Skool features 11 great songs fans of R & B, Gospel, Pop, and Jazz will love.
