Conor Walsh – ‘Signal to the Sun'

By Matt Wong & Staff

“Signal to the Sun” begins acapella, with Walsh’s soulful lead vocal supported by lush vocal harmonies. The acapella is mixed fairly dry, which creates a sense of connection for the listener to Walsh as he delivers his moving love story. Following the acapella chorus, Walsh is joined by the acoustic guitar, and a string section for the first verse.

The instrumentation, augmented by light cymbals remains consistent through the chorus, afterwards which, the drums enter on the second verse with a energizing tom figure. As the drums segue into a driving rock groove, the song continues to grow towards peak intensity before scaling back for an acapella ending making "Signal to the Sun" highly engaging for the ears.

The lyrics in “Signal to the Sun” are derived from a poem written by Walsh when he was in a long distance relationship. At the time, Walsh would tell his girlfriend to look up at the sunshine filled sky because although they were apart, they would be looking at the same sky. The lyrics, which describe how her presence is like kryptonite” and how her kiss is the cure” details the passion in the relationship, and immerses listeners into the love story behind the lyrics.

“Signal to the Sun” by Conor Walsh is the complete package of songwriting, musicianship, and artistry. From the first notes, Walsh shows of his vocal prowess and control in an acapella setting, before blending his sound with his band. The song, with its beautiful melody, and memorable lyrics, is framed perfectly by the song’s arrangement, and helps listeners take in the song’s story. To top it off, Walsh is backed by a stellar group of musicians who perform the song with pristine artistry.
