Happy Curmudgeons - "3rd Coast"

Review by Ionas Finser & Staff

The Happy Curmudgeons are a group of studio musicians mainly from the Metro Detroit area. Dave Hamilton put the group together in 2015 and they released their first album, Meant 2 Be, in Dec. of 2017. The band is currently working on their second album, 2nd Chances, with producer Mark Byerly .

An easygoing mandolin strums its way into the intro of “3rd Coast”, accompanied by a smooth, satisfying bass. David Hamilton’s voice enters, full of grit and soul, charming you into a state of relaxation and enjoyment. The mood of the song is distinctly upbeat and carefree, inspiring emotional freedom and wistful nostalgia.

You won’t easily forget the spirited chorus either, which provides the temptation to dance and sing along. Happy Curmudgeons’ lyrics in “3rd Coast” recall the artists’ love of the Great Lakes in the summertime. However, the message of the song serves to evoke more universal emotions and memories in its listeners. In spirit, “3rd Coast” is about freedom, home, and living life.

“This bird has flown

and this rolling stone is going home

Been on the road for quite a while,

the clothes I wear are back in style”

“3rd Coast” brings us refreshingly happy vibes, fueled by a band that isn’t afraid to be upbeat and humorous. No matter where life drops us off, it is always important to remember where one’s roots are, and what ‘home’ means to you. Happy Curmudgeons convey this message in style, providing all the soul and passion their listeners need to feel inspired.
