Jeremy Parsons - 'Things To Come'

Reviewed by Aaron Cloutier & Staff

Hard lessons learned, correcting course and the decisions one must make when coming to a crossroad in their life are among the many powerful themes behind the melancholy and emotive “Things To Come” from singer songwriter Jeremy Parsons. Though the song is pensive in tone and color, it is simultaneously forward thinking and optimistic as the overall message is centered around old doors closing so that new doors can open.

Amidst the shimmering acoustic guitars, nimble fingered baselines and minimalist percussion, Parson’s vocals command full attention with a delivery that is both soulful and earnest as he tells his story of finding his way back after a rollercoaster of drugs and alcohol in the pursuit of self discovery.

Sonically, there’s plenty for the ear to follow in “Things To Come.” I was pleased to detect what sounded like tambourine along with clean guitars awash in tremolo as the 6/8 meter of the rhythm produces a swaying like effect to the music. The end result being nothing short of hypnotic.

The production is bright, but in a slightly gritty way. It puts my mind out in some dusty desert somewhere. The chorus is undeniably catchy with sweet vocal harmonies and heart wrenching chord changes that will surely get a reaction out of even the most hardened of listeners. If timeless, soul filled, sun-dried Americana is what you’re after, “Things To Come” is well worth your time.
