For the past 12 years, singer-songwriter Justin Fancy has been a nightly performer on the competitive George street music scene in the heart of St. John’s, Newfoundland. In advance of his full album (anticipated release 2020) Justin released his first two singles – “Long Time Comin’” and “Think About You.” “Long Time Comin,’” is an autobiographical song about his journey as a musician. In contrast to the more upbeat "Long Time Comin,’" Fancy’s second single, “Think About You,” is a modern-day, more mature version of the classic ‘hurtin’ song’ format about love and loss. The two singles, as well as the songs from his forthcoming album, were produced by fellow Newfoundlander Clint Curtis, who is a veteran musician in his own right. For fans who have never heard your music, can you pick three words to describe it?! If three words just aren't enough then tell us more!!
From the heart
When you are writing a song, where do you draw inspiration from? Or what topics do you like to sing about?
I listen to my emotions normally. Every time I've planned to sit down and write a song, I could never write one. It always just came out of me when I had been thinking about something. Something that has meant something to me in the past or present.
Okay, this a fun question. When you are not doing music, what else do you enjoy doing?
Boating, Golfing, Snowmobiling. I enjoy the outdoors.
Can you tell us what song you've written that is the most emotional and describe the meaning behind it?
"Think About You", my latest single is the most emotional for me. Just because it has a roller coaster of emotions attached to it. The song is based on a past relationship that failed but the emotions were still attached when I wrote the song, so obviously a lot of ups and downs of emotions there.
What was the first song or piece you ever wrote!?
"The Tide". It's the first track on an album I recorded with a Folk/Traditional band Eastern Passage. I wrote it when I was 13. The song is a complete 360 of the music and songs I'm recorded and writing now. I grew up listening to traditional Newfoundland music as well as country music, so it was in my blood, we'll say.
Take a listen to Justin's first single, released in advance of his upcoming album, "Long Time Comin'" The video for “Long Time Comin’” is charming and delightful, thanks to the lovable, freestyle dancing of Fancy’s young daughter, Kayleigh
What is your dream gig? Is there a gig that you really want that would be the ultimate show for you?
Believe it or not, this one's a little close to home. I'd love to headline the George Street Festival, where I developed my craft all these years. Just to play for my hometown, home province, on the stage where I gazed and dreamed of being on for all these years - that would be a treat.
Are you working on any new material right now or what's in the works for the upcoming year?
Yes, I'm currently tracking my debut album, in which my previous two single releases will be featured on. That will debut in the Fall of 2020.
