By Aaron Cloutier & Staff

The W.A M. Awards celebrate the year’s most outstanding independent artists from around the world in multiple genres and categories. "Best Song" and "Best Album" nominations were based on Artistry, Musicianship, Originality, Professionalism, Diversity, and Excellence. W.A.M. stands for "We Are the Music Makers.' Pauline Frechette's "Jewel Box" was the 2020 W.A.M. Award Winner for Best Song in the Instrumental music category.

“Jewel Box” is an instrumental piece which speaks volumes. Simultaneously articulate and abstract, this piece is captivating from beginning to end. The opening melodic theme is bittersweet and dark. When we first hear this melody it is played on a piano in a high register supported by strings, which occasionally punctuate melodic phrases. When we hear the melody again, this time doubled by a viola, one can’t help but be enthralled and want to know where this story will go.

Sophisticated orchestration and development of themes keep this song moving forward and keep the listener’s engagement. Each time a melody is repeated it is stated in a new way, building throughout the short but impactful song to create a compelling narrative. The effect of the piece derives its elegance through a delicate balance. It is just intricate enough to make a statement, while remaining intimate and accessible. Contemplative and haunting, the song is undeniably well-crafted.

With “Jewel Box” you receive quality from every angle. The recoding and mixing of the song, precise instrumental performance, and expert arrangement combine to create a genuinely engaging experience. At the song’s resolution, the story feels complete, and leaves the listener with a sense of closure. Set aside a few minutes to listen to “Jewel Box” with your eyes closed…you’ll be glad you did.
