Crisp acoustic guitars, spacious synths, warm resonant piano keys married with a quasi country style croon with rich vibrato are the hallmarks of “Christmas Cards” by singer songwriter and pastor Peter Unger.
Peter’s work draws inspiration from a variety of genres. Listeners will be able to pick up elements of Folk, Gospel, Celtic and the aforementioned Country influence in “Christmas Cards”. Though void of any percussive elements here, the rhythm is solid in part due to Peter’s strong sense of timing.
Though a holiday song, the lyrical content is not surprisingly centered around more spiritual themes as depicted in lyrics such as…
“And in the darkest night
There glows a wondrous light
That shows the place
for all the world to see
Joyful singing upon high
A host of Angels glorify”
The mix is very bright compared to a number of contemporaries I’ve heard lately. This compliments the guitars in particular to my ear as there’s a brightness to them that stands out. The sonic landscape of the song as a whole is bathed in a healthy helping of reverb that brings an atmospheric element and even a subtle ethereal-like vibe to the song which is very appealing. It serves to further accentuate the spiritual context of the lyrical content.
Overall, “Christmas Cards” has everything that makes a mighty contender in the realm of Christmas music. If you’re a fan of gospel infused folk, I think you’ll find this to be a welcomed addition to your collection.
